The Mojito is one of the classic cocktails that every bartender and cocktail lover should know how to prepare. But before knowing how to make a tasty Mojito, let's talk about the origins of this drink.
As most of us know, the Mojito is a Cuban drink. But there are many different stories of how the Mojito was created. It is belived that the original Mojito was created as a medical remedy for treating diseases in Cuba. The alcohol was used to give warm to the body, the lemon was used to fight the scurvy (deficiency of vitamin c), the sugar and the mint made the drink fresh and easy to consume. This remedy was also used for curing stomachache,prevent the cholera They used Cuban moonshine mixed with sugar cane syrup, lime and mint.
This drink was introduced to the english pirate Francis Drake when he visited the island. However they changed the recipe and instead of using Cuban moonshine, they used rum. The drink during that time was known as El Draque, until it was called Mojito. It is said that the word Mojito comes from the African word Mojo, which means those things the can happen after taking a couple of Mojitos. Other say that the word Mojito comes from the spanish word "Mojo", which means mixture.
Despite there are many different stories of how the Mojito was created and the origin of the word, this drink has become a classic cocktail known world wide. In 2013 it was considered as the most popular cocktail.
This cocktail began it's popularity world wide during the times of Ernest Hemingway in Cuba, it was one of Hemingway's favourite cocktail recipe.
Also it became popular after being featured in the James Bond movie Die Another Day 2002, when the actor Pierce Brosnan offers a Mojito to the sexy actress Halle Berry in a cuban hotel. After that the actress responds: "I can get used to it's taste".

Classic Mojito Recipe
- 2 teaspoons of cane sugar
- 4 tablespoons lime juice
- 14 spearmint leaves
- 60 milliliters of Bacardi white rum
- 140 milliliters of soda or mineral water
Combine all the ingredients except the soda in a small glass and crush them with a Cocktail Muddler for a few seconds. If you don't have a Cocktail Muddler, you can also use a spoon or fork. It is important not to cut the mint, but just bruise it so the essential oils are released from the herb.
Add soda or mineral water to taste. If you want your Mojito a bit sweeter, don't add to much soda. But that depends on each person's taste. So serve it as you like it!
